Writing a good reality change story

I've read and written a few stories in which a character's reality starts changing and the character has to deal with it. I feel that I have a good understanding reality warping in fiction, but feel that it can be better. Are there important tropes and ideas to keep a reality shifting story fresh?

Be sure you keep in mind the "rules" you've set up for the story -- is the main character fully aware that reality is changing around them? Dimly aware? Unaware? Are other people aware, and to what degree?

Think about what effects the reality change could be having on the character's clothing... other possessions... home and living situation... family and relationships... even the entire world. Obviously, you don't have to describe every single thing that gets altered as a result of the reality change, but a few specific details discovered by the main character can definitely add interest.
