Parent Chapter

"Fine," Eve growled. She'd play along with Miranda's little game, at least for now. She could certainly hold off on making negative comments for a day, and in the meantime she could formulate a way to get the remote back. Once she did, Miranda would be getting the transformation of a lifetime... "Let's get this over with."

The walk to Miranda's job was hell. She hated the way her belly jiggled with every step she took, and she felt like everyone in the world was staring at her exposed flab, though most people just shot her a disinterested glance then looked away, not particularly interested in a cute girl with a belly roll.

They arrived at the restaurant at the same time as one of Miranda's coworkers, a cute, buff blonde boy named Jeff. Eve actually felt an immediate attraction to him, and was beginning to look forward to spending the entire shift flirting with him, until he opened his mouth.

"Hey M'randa," he drawled. "Who's yer cute friend?"

Ugh, just another uneducated hick, Eve thought to herself, but managed to bite her tongue.

"Hey Jeff, this is my best friend Eve," Miranda said, shooting the blonde a wicked smile.

"Charmed," Eve smiled weakly at him.

"Damn gurl," he hooted. "If alla yer friends are this hot, why don't you bring em by more often?"

The shift was dreadfully dull for Eve, who spent most of it on her phone. She saw all her friends' newsfeeds filling up with fun activities like shopping or going out for lunch, and it was driving Eve crazy being stuck in here with all these high school dropouts. She couldn't imagine how Miranda put up with it; all they ever talked about was their trucks, dumb action movies, and getting drunk at the bar.

The afternoon also had the added effect of turning Eve off fast food for the rest of her life. While she rarely ate it to begin with, seeing the dumb oafs who made it, and the careless, slovenly way they handled the food, made her swear to never eat fast food again.

It was nearing the end of the shift, and Eve couldn't wait for the day to end. She was a whirlwind of angst and frustration, as well as smug satisfaction that she'd gone the entire shift without insulting everyone. Hell, even if she didn't get the remote back, she could work off this little potbelly in no time and Miranda's grand plan to "teach her a lesson" would be an utter failure.

However, it was just then that Jeff called from the front counter for Miranda.

"M'randa! M'randa!" he called, getting on Eve's nerves. Miranda was busy deep frying some fries, so it was a while before she was able to address his calls for help.

"What is it?" Miranda asked, wiping her hands on her thick backside and rushing up to the counter.

"Um, this guy gave me twenty dollars and a penny, but his total was just like $15.51, I tol' him he don't need to give me the penny, but he keeps tellin' me it makes his change better or summin'..."

Miranda sighed, and was about to inform him that the guy just wanted 2 quarters back instead of 49 cents, but Eve couldn't contain herself any more and interrupted.

"Oh my god you dumb oaf, he just wants two quarters back, is that so hard to get through your thick skull?"

Miranda's head snapped back, glaring at Eve with a wicked grin. "What was that?"

"I was just, I mean..." Eve felt lightheaded and dizzy. It felt like her head was stuffed with cotton, like the thoughts were there but she couldn't quite reach them. "Um, like, that was a trick my mama taught me," she drawled, casually scratching her belly. "If ya give em an extra penny, then they gotta give ya quarters back instead of those worthless as shit pennies," she snickered.

"Oh!" a light went on in Jeff's head. Not only was Miranda's friend cute, she was real good at explaining things. Most of the time, peoples' answers went right over his head...

Eve meanwhile started to panic. She knew she'd done something wrong, but couldn't quite remember what. She did start to feel more relaxed, both being in the kitchen of a fast food restaurant, and being surrounded by people who were a bit slower. In fact, it was kind of nice, not having to constantly try to be as smart as everyone else at that dumb ol' college...

  1. Jeff invites Eve and Miranda to a party that night, which Eve eagerly agrees to.
  2. Eve likes it here so much she asks for a job application.
  3. Miranda informs Eve that they both have a test in 20 minutes, and whisks them back to campus.
  4. Something else.
  5. Something else.
