Apocalypse and Magneto had turn up the middle of New York in a ruthless battle for power. The X-Men had flown in, of course, to deal with them, but as they approached Apocalypse unleashed a strange weapon against Magneto, and the master of magnetism responded with his powers... and then had been an explosion of energy. Fortunately, they had managed to capture the stunned evil mutants, but they had been changed.
