I think downgrades are just easier to write with; the conflict is easily defined. That said I wrote one story where a character is downgraded, but then turns the tables and is considerably upgraded. And, in the end, both mains characters end up upgraded. But, I think there's something more relatable in downgrades; sooner or later, we all get older, fatter, more worn out etc.
