The Warper - Southland Tales

Parent Chapter

Not far from the hotel in which Emma Watson and her magic wand were ensconced stood the Chinese Theater, where about two-thirds of the way into the evening showing of the weekend's big Hollywood blockbuster, everyone in the building became highly sexualized and, well, Chinese. Similarly, everyone who happened to be within the boundaries of Little Tokyo became Japanese, the women's faces magically painted with permanent geisha makeup.

Downtown, patrons of the Los Angeles Philharmonic suddenly found themselves watching as the orchestra accompanied exotic dancers on stage, as Disney Hall had suddenly become the world's only strip club designed by Frank Gehry. The clubs on the aptly-named Sunset Strip also all became strip clubs, if not quite as classy -- but a few well-known bands who'd been on stage in the various clubs were quite surprised to transform from musicians into strippers.

The largest breasts were found in communities with "hills" in the name, from Granada Hills and Mission Hills to Cheviot Hills and, of course, Beverly Hills, where Rodeo Drive was now nothing but upscale sex shops and boutiques selling the fashion-designer versions of porn-movie fashions that were now de rigueur in the L.A. area. Silver Lake habitués found themselves with silver jewelry filling a plethora of body piercings, which suited the local hipsters just fine.

The magic definitely had a certain sense of humor. A Virgin America flight that happened to be just landing at LAX when the wave hit had everyone on board transform to look like teenage schoolgirls, complete with an ultra-skimpy version of a school uniform -- and they would later discover the magically-regenerating hymens they now possessed. In the highly Armenian suburb of Glendale, the Kardashians were used as the template for the female transformations, with lucky women ending up resembling Kim, and the unlucky ones looking more like Khloe. Women who'd been in Santa Monica soon became known for the unusually loud noises they were compelled to make during sex, which someone eventually figured out was an homage to the tennis-court grunts of Monica Seles.

Emma knew none of this yet; she'd fallen asleep, the wand's tip still barely poking inside her, the wand's shaft lying against her abdomen.

  1. Emma has a dream that causes the wand to activate again.
  2. Emma wakes up in the morning to a Los Angeles that's dealing with the changes well.
  3. Emma wakes up in the morning to a Los Angeles that's dealing with the changes poorly.
  4. Something, or someone, wakes Emma up in the middle of the night.
  5. The Warper thinks things have gone too far, even for him, and tries to set things right.
  6. The Warper goes out to explore the new world he's indirectly created.
  7. Something else.
  8. Something else.
